For example, consider countries like Finland (#1 broadband penetration), Norway, USA, or even countries closer to us like Japan, Korea or even developing nations like PRC. They are all certainly rolling out broadband 3G and 4G (on the horizon) services very soon. But, these are the same countries that have been most active in the Fiber to the Curb (FTTx/FTTc) initiatives. These countries are the ones that are making the most impact in terms of getting fiber to end users.
What does this say? To me it says that - yes 3G/4G is certainly a good option for the mobile broadband user, but one cannot do away with the fiber to the curb or even the end user, if one wants to have sustainable broadband initiatives.
This to me is a critical aspect of broadband policy for the future of the Indian scenario. We are tending to neglect the basics of telecom too much, opting for easily visible and short term impactful options.. leaving the more sustainable options in the dark..
